In order to re-connect the Canal to the River Thames a way must be found through the urban development of Abingdon.  There have been several schemes, but in the end only two serious contenders.  The first is to use as much of the old route through the town, and where this is impossible to use the River Ock and the site of the Ock Bridge as a junction.  The second is a completely new route south of the town to rejoin the original line on the west side of the A34.  For many reasons the second option is the preferred choice.  Feasibility studies and surveys are well advanced for this route.

This "suggested" route becomes more possible thanks to the IWA Jubilee Grant.
