From WBCT magazine (Dragonfly) Autumn 2007 Abingdon Branch Revived! Following an increase in local membership of about 20 since the Abingdon Jubilee Junction opened, a meeting was held on 12th September to gauge the degree of support for the resurrection of the dormant Abingdon Branch. Some 20 people attended, one member having travelled for eleven hours from Reading in his narrowboat to be there. The necessary 12 members indicated that they would willing to be regarded as Abingdon Branch members and a request will be made to the Council of Management on 25 September for the re-formation of the Branch to he formally approved. Martin Buckland will be Chairman, Angela Ford, Secretary and Ruby Lamboll will take up her previous role as Treasurer. After a short formal meeting Martin gave a slightly updated version of the presentation he had given to the Friends of Abingdon Museum the previous week. This had resulted from the `Waterways in Oxfordshire' exhibition for which the Trust had been asked to provide a display. Resulting from the exhibition a number of very interesting old paintings and photographs have come to light from local residents. A 96 year-old lady, now living in Canada, who used to operate rowing boats around the canal entrance on the Thames is being contacted as she may have photographs which could show the elusive view of the canal entrance.
Martin Buckland Stop Press ... Abingdon Branch! Following on from Martin's piece (above) I'm pleased to confirm that the recent Council of Management meeting confirmed the re-activation of the Abingdon branch. The next edition of Dragonfly will include the additional branch report. The website will also be updated to reflect the addition of Abingdon. If you are a current member and would like more information about the branch please contact Martin Buckland (details on the Trust officials page).
